Frequently Asked Questions on Safe Food Storage Containers
Is Tupperware toxic free?
Tupperware made before 2010 may contain BPA and other harmful chemicals. Since 2010, they started to use BPA-free plastics.
However, just because Tupperware is BPA-free doesn’t mean it’s completely non-toxic. There may be other harmful chemicals like BPS in Tupperware. It’s best to avoid plastic food containers altogether and choose materials like glass, stainless steel, or silicone.
What food containers contain PFAS?
PFAS, known as “forever chemicals” are harmful chemicals that can stay in the body and environment forever.
Many single-use cardboard food containers like pizza boxes and fast food packaging may contain PFAS.
Can food containers be recycled?
Food containers made with glass, stainless steel, or silicone can be recycled.
As for plastic food containers, not all of them can be recycled. If there is a #1 or #2 recycling symbol on the plastic, it can be widely recycled in the United States. Plastics #3 to #6 are more difficult to recycle so some recycling centers may not take them. Plastic #7 is the hardest to recycle and many recycling centers won’t take them.
