public goods glassware

My Top Pick: Public Goods Tumblers

I love how minimal and slick this glass tumbler looks! It looks just like the ones upscale coffee shops use.

These glasses are made with borosilicate glass. It’s even dishwasher-safe, oven-safe, and microwave-safe.

First things first, what type of glass is non-toxic?

  • Borosilicate Glass: Not just used for everyday glassware but also commonly used in the lab for beakers, flasks, and test tubes. This glass material is also highly durable and harder to break than soda lime glass. It has thermal shock capabilities so it’s less likely to shatter.
  • Soda Lime Glass: It’s non-toxic because it doesn’t leak harmful chemicals into the contents. Compared to borosilicate glass, soda lime glass has lower thermal resistance so it is easier to break when it’s exposed to rapid temperature changes. I noticed that many glassware companies nowadays use tempered glass which is soda-lime glass that’s heat-treated to make it extra durable. Overall, it’s less expensive than borosilicate.

Any types of glass to avoid?

  • Lead Glass: Lead glass contains lead oxide (PbO) which creates a more reflective appearance. Since it contains lead, it’s not safe to use. It’s considered safe for decorative use but not safe to drink from because lead can leach into the drink.

It’s best to choose borosilicate glass, soda-lime glass, or tempered glass as safer alternatives.
