Is stainless steel flatware non toxic?

Yes, stainless steel flatware is non toxic. However, there are different grades of stainless steel and various types have different qualities. So, what’s the safest material for silverware?

18/10 Stainless Steel: Contains 10% nickel and 18% chromium which makes it rust-proof. Considered the highest quality of stainless steel and safest silverware. This is the type of stainless steel I always look for in non toxic flatware.

18/0 Stainless Steel: Contains no nickel and 18% chromium. This is the best type of stainless steel if you’re allergic to nickel. The downside to this type is it’s not very strong and is not as anti-corrosive.

18/8 Stainless Steel: Contains 8% nickel and 18% chromium. This is considered a lower grade of stainless steel so I didn’t include this type of flatware listed in my list.

What is the safest material for flatware?

Besides stainless steel, what is the best flatware material? These are some of the safest materials and most popular materials to use in flatware.

Bamboo: Bamboo utensils don’t use metals or harmful chemicals to produce. It’s an excellent choice as flatware because it’s very durable and is anti-bacterial.

Wood: Wood, like bamboo, is a sustainable material and eco-friendly. It’s a great option for non toxic flatware brands as well.

Silver: Pure silver or sterling silver is a great nontoxic silverware choice and one of the safest flatware to use. These types of non toxic utensils are naturally antimicrobial and anti-bacterial. It’s even more durable than stainless steel and can last a lifetime. The only downside is it often is quite expensive but worth it if you plan to use the same flatware set for a long time.

What flatware materials to avoid?

Plastic: Plastic dinnerware is very convenient to use but the main concern with using it is when it’s exposed to heat, it releases dangerous chemicals. It’s also not a sustainable material to use so best to avoid plastic utensils if possible. The good news is there are safer options to use instead like disposable bamboo cutlery.

Silver-Plated Flatware: Silver-plated silverware sets are a popular material but are generally not safe to use. It may contain some amount of lead inside the material which is not good to consume.

That’s a wrap on the best flatware sets! Which one is your favorite?
